Composition

Both of her hands tightly grip the bright metal ring, suspended by sturdy chain links. Her arms are straight, with her knees together between them. She is pulling her torso up toward her legs, which cross at the ankles, bringing her feet together. Her head hangs; it’s the lowest part of her body. She keeps her back straight, approximately at a right angle to her thighs.

Her face portrays calmness despite the tension in her pose. The bright red, elbow-length gloves she wears are a quirky choice for this athletic performance of balance and vigor. Her bright blue eyes are wide open and dramatically rimmed by dark eyelashes. Her stare mixes concentration with contentment.

Tension in her body shows that her weight is distributed between both her arms and her legs. She holds herself static; momentarily stable, yet rigid. This is a dichotomy of stillness and tension, echoed in the pairing of high-fashion gloves with her nudity, and in the relationship of her supple, feminine form supported by robust sections of steel.

Although the view out the two window pains and the doorway at the left edge are large and bright, the viewer is enticed to hunt for details in her facial features. Its natural to disregard these larger rectangular structures and explore the organic forms.

The sky is darkened and full of moody clouds. A balcony indicates a loft location. The woodgrain floor of an efficiency apartment is a further clue of a modest abode in a choice location.

Her hair is slicked back and she gazes forward, her eyes hidden under thick lashes. The shadow of her head falls across one shoulder. The tops of her arms, forehead, and side of her chest glow with intense sunlight.

The surface is a jumble of glassy swirls and ripples. Despite some distortion from droplets and ripples, the water is clear and the image has an unreserved nature.

There is a sense of tranquility to the image, the protagonist seems unconcerned with her surroundings. Her only interest seems to be enjoying this moment in the sun and water. In this way, the artwork has a sense of immediacy, as if the scene is occurring simultaneous to us witnessing it. Having the scene displayed in vivid color reinforces this effect.

The sky is soft but varied with clouds and the glow of sunlight. Highlights on the water hint at the low angle of the sun. The rocks along the lower edge are distinct enough to frame the image, without drawing the eye out.

Theme

The figure in this image is inserted into this natural scene at an angle. The line of the swinging rope is a prominent line that defies the series of horizontal lines set up in the landscape.
