She is turned sideways, looking back over her shoulder. She is in mid-stride and one arm hugs her ribcage. The other arm extends forward from her body. Her blonde hair frames her face and drapes halfway down her back.

The scene is shallow, the rock wall behind the primary subject is close to the ground on which she stands. Although the setting is outdoors, we don’t see enough of the terrain for this to be.a landscape. There is no horizon or sky in the image. The lack of context brings the feeling of a stage performance to this visual arrangement.

The most intense area of rock is the orange patch that starts in the upper right corner and extends to the middle of the image. It surrounds the figure down to her thighs. More muted color occupies the lower third of the image, following the horizontal lines in the rock. These lines mimic combed hair, and are just one of the many patterns in the artwork.

Physique is taught, illustrating the musculature of her lithe figure. She bends her ankles, pointing her toes straight back from her legs, displaying her feet at a deliberately theatrical angle.

She looks forward confidently with an equally theatrical expression. Her lips are parted and her expression makes her pose seem effortless, contrary to the undeniable physics involved in her position.

She is nude except for a pair of long black socks that cover from her toes up to her knees. Her body glows brightly against the dense background. Her hair and socks, as well as the top and bottom edges of the image, provide deep tones that contrast with the brighter elements in the image.

Highlights on the chain emphasize its metallic luster. The shimmering chain runs from the top of the frame, where it is secured to an unseen support, down the front of her body, then drapes over her raised thigh.

The woman’s limbs are extended and her muscles clearly defined. Her large eyes are accented by theatrically thick, dark lashes. Her blonde hair cascades halfway down her back. Around her neck is a delicate lace choker, an oddity on her muscular body in this inhospitable environment.

Composition

Sand clings to her nude body, creating an intermittent pattern of granules from shoulders to fingertips to toes. Her shadow separates her from the sand beneath her, then extends to the right and out of the frame, lessening her isolation in the scene. The dark area of distant mountains at the left, which also extends out of the frame, balances this shadow element.

The landscape is divided horizontally through the middle by the top of the sand dune on which she is perched. Additional dunes recede into the hazy distance. Faraway gray mountains define the boundary between horizon and sky. Footprints in the foreground are echoed on the next dune, yet no other people are visible in the vast expanse of white gypsum desert.

A hairband pulls her dark hair away from the sides of her head, ensuring we see most of her profile. The pattern of the cloth is noteworthy in the otherwise sparsely populated image. The top of the frame is heavy with dark negative space (background) while the foreground is lit more brightly. Overall, the brightest areas of the photographic composition are the edges of the body.

Although only fragments of wooden planks are visible, the unmistakable shape of a robust cross is discernible. Its scale prompts thoughts of a literal crucifix. The cross seems inexplicably suspended; she leans on the planks for support, yet we cannot see where the wood rests or understand why it doesn’t fall. This aspect adds a bit of surrealism to this black and white art photograph. Her arms are bent forward at the elbows, reducing their visual impact and lending visual weight to the beam. The wooden structure slants to the left, in equilibrium to the rightward tilt of her torso.

She wears high heeled shoots, laced up high on her ankles. The shoes are suede, adding to the textures of the wood and her body in the large photograph. At this large scale, this and other details are easy to discern.

The primary construction of this image is achieved through horizontal bands of bold pattern and texture. These distinct rectangular blocks of composition provide immediate structure.

Blue water with ribbons of dancing sunlight occupy nearly half of the image at the top. Thousands of green teardrop leaves fill the lower third of the image, providing a deckle edge that disrupts the repetition of straight horizontal lines. Pavement, the white pool edge, a yellow towel, and her body occupy the central zone.

In this way, this nude art composition is a mix of carefully planned and chaotic elements. The ripples of water are in constant flux and beyond control. The leaves are too numerous to be deliberately arranged. Yet the horizontal lines that divide each rectangular area were clearly a thoughtful consideration.

The towel adds a degree of context. This is not a beach towel or resort towel, it’s the size of a bath towel. This small consideration reveals the moment as a seemingly spontaneous indulgence.

The organic shape of her body and her shadow disrupt the horizontal bands of pattern. Despite the carefully arranged areas of color and pattern, the nude art composition has a spontaneous mood to it. Two knobs are visible on the control panel of the clothes dryer. The panel has a gleaming brushed-metallic finish. Above the woman are three cabinets. Two knobs are visible on the cabinet doors, repeating the shape of the knobs on the dryer. Behind her is a door, recognizable only by a single hinge, the rest of the door is hidden by a thick curtain. The lines of the appliances, door frame, and cabinet are straight up and down, as well as left to right.

On the back wall, visible in the gap between the washer and the door is an electrical cord plugged into an outlet. The cord forms a wavy black line. The other similarly wavy lines in this composition are the curtain on the door, the woman’s light hair, and the fabric that she holds.

The incongruity of the unexpected scene is that a nude woman is performing the everyday task of doing laundry. The image is clearly a performance: she has a single garment and her stance prioritizes being seen over completing her presumed task.

Other than her nudity, there are few distinctive elements in the scene. The nondescript cabinetry and confined space make it appear to be the laundry room of a modest home.

The black-and-white checkerboard flooring has a nostalgic flair and draws interest to the setting. The classic tile pattern is one well suited to a monochromatic art nude photograph. Compositionally, the flooring pattern is an example of perceptive lines in an image that is mostly structured through horizontal and vertical lines. In this way, it is one of the few elements that gives the small space a sense of depth.

There is a dual nature to the image. The tire is perfectly round, imposing, and manufactured. The protagonist is organic and, other than her interaction with the tire, dissimilar to it in all these aspects. Additionally, the tire is sturdy and robust while her body is lithe and lanky. Her legs are uplifted but not parallel. Her arms are parallel. Her face is towards the camera, and her gaze is turned oddly up and away.

The tire divides this image and provides an example of continuity, the visual concept by which we understand both halves of her body to belong to the same person, despite not being able to see all of her. The figure is surrounded by dense gray tones, which help make her contour stand out. The composition relies on the Gestalt principle of continuity and this contrast helps associate her legs with the rest of her body on either side of the tire which obscures her middle.

There are various intricate details in the otherwise black mass of the tire. The coarse tread is prominent and contains multiple levels of subdivision. Tiny nibs of rubber are visible on parts of the tire.

The use of an automobile tire as an element in this limited edition art is reminiscent of artworks such as Robert Rauschenberg’s “Monogram”, Herb Ritts’s “Fred with Tires” and Banksy’s “Kid Rolling A Burning Tire”. In the context of a female figure, Pirelli calendar photographers such as Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon are also obvious influences.

Our protagonist lies on a pebbly, sunlight-dappled surface. This black and white photograph shows a nude woman on her stomach, bracing her body against the ground with her arms. Shadows from foliage criss-cross her body at the edge between sunlight and denser shadows. Most of her back is visible, as well as her face. Her gaze is directed downward, and she stares intently.

The distribution of shadow and light places the bulk of dark tones in the background, near the top of the image. A diagonal division exists at the far edge of the subject’s body. She is bathed in sunlight, rendering her body brighter than the other areas of the image.

Her posture, including her expression, is calculated to draw intrigue. Her arms are folded, with her weight on her splayed fingers. It is ambiguous whether she is lifting herself up, has just lowered her body down, or is merely static. Her attention is focused on some unseen object or thought. Her eyes are dark slits, mysteriously hidden beneath sumptuous lashes. Around her neck is a necklace, the pendant, a hand of Fatima (hamsa) symbol, barely visible, lies on the ground in her shadow.

Patterns exist on varying overlaid scales in the image. Shadow patterns overlay the pattern of pebbles in the pavement. Points of light peak through the darkness at the top. The lower portion is predominantly light, with the pattern of foliage laid over the top of it.
