This artwork depicts a splash in a Florida swimming pool as an unclad diver plunges beneath the surface. She is anonymous, her face underwater and only her legs and hips exposed. Our vantage point excludes a horizon, landscape, or other context, opting rather to fixate on the nearby activity. The figure is tightly framed, her fingers and toes are very close to the bottom and top of the frame.

The colors in this image are deliberately bright and varied in their hue and intensity. Electric ribbons of sunlight stand out against the deep blue tones of the water. The peachy skin of the diver and terra-cotta colored pavement are clearly distinct from the cool tones of the pool. The rich colors emphasize the strong Florida sun.

The splash lasts about one second and is the central fascination of the image. The surrounding pool, a permanent structure, is of much less concern.

Aaron Knight first visited Florida when visiting grandparents on his mother’s side. He has been returning there during his art career to make images that celebrate the state’s visual themes of warmth, water, diversion, and revelry. He was drawn to Florida for its soothing and sometimes indulgent scenery and colors. It seems in Florida everybody has a swimming pool and are not so much a symbol of luxury but of enjoying life regardless of one’s station.

Considerations

This image shows motion through varying levels of crispness and blur between moving and stationary elements. These aspects can be examined prior to purchase by fully zooming in on each preview.
