# Double Life

Viewed from overhead, a nude woman lies isolated on a large sheet. She gazes to the side with her head propped up on a pillow, either looking at something off of the bed or lost in an empty stare.

### Composition

This art photograph contains several key elements in its sparse design. The major [compositional elements](https://www.aaronknightgallery.com/shop/limited-edition-art/photographic-composition-almost-comforted/) are the woman and the vast expanse of negative (less-detailed) space around her. The negative space consists of the white sheet and pillow. Surrounding her is a texture of folds and wrinkles, with smaller points of interest scattered through the scene.

The sheet and pillow have a slight blue cast to them, although some warm shadows are also present. Additional textures can be found in the light goosebumps on her body and the scrap of newspaper near her foot.

Her body is mostly [symmetrical](https://www.aaronknightgallery.com/shop/limited-edition-art/traditional-gelatin-silver/five-sign/) and centered, though her figure is slightly out of alignment with the vertical edges of the image—an imbalance further emphasized by her bent leg. The image is neither overt nor concealing in its presentation of her nude form. Yet, for the uninitiated, the stark simplicity of the unclothed body may be unexpected.

Closer inspection reveals smaller details, beginning with the phone clutched loosely to her sternum. As the darkest object in this high-key scene, it draws attention to her hands. Hands are a natural point of interest that often hint at a character’s intentions or thoughts. In this case, her relaxed grip indicates she is no longer concerned with her device, perhaps having set it aside while drifting into contemplation.

Two silver chains drape around her neck: one strung with silver stars, the other a crucifix, barely discernible at its size and angle, resting on her jugular. Her eyes are dramatically outlined with thick eyelashes while her trimmed fingernails display a classic French tip manicure. Her toenails, in contrast, are painted a deep rose color.

### Theme

Near her outstretched leg is a scrap of [newspaper](https://www.aaronknightgallery.com/shop/limited-edition-art/original-conceptual-nude-notcin/). The paper is a torn quarter-page, likely saved for the purpose of retaining a specific piece of information, though its actual content is illegible. The narrow column headings suggest this might be a classified advertising section. The inclusion of a phone and newspaper in the same image suggests a particular [time period](https://www.aaronknightgallery.com/shop/limited-edition-art/black-white-pinup-polaroid/) when both were prominent in people’s daily lives.

The protagonist’s expression and mood are difficult to read. She appears comfortable and materially content, however, she seems lost in thought and disconnected from the present moment. This sense of disconnection is heightened by the overhead perspective, which gives the feeling of an observed narrative rather than any kind of personal interaction with the subject.
