There is a level of acknowledgement in one woman’s gaze as she looks at the viewer, as though she has more to reveal.  The women’s figures are pressed firmly against one another without inhibition in a caress that is more sororal than passionate. They are calm and comfortable in one another’s embrace, despite their focus on distant concepts.

Two bodies intertwined and interacting conveys a concept, in this case the affection and closeness conveyed through an embrace. The way the bodies interact, whether they acknowledge each other, and the setting in which they are placed are crucial to the piece. Egon Schiele’s 1911 piece Two Women Embracing shows a similar subject matter featuring two women lying in a bed, though it is more erotically charged. It was the end of a wonderful summer and the sun was getting lower in the afternoon sky. The stream water and breeze in the cool shade caused her to shiver and she laid on the warm rocks to soak up the sun’s glow before the opportunity was gone.

Despite its direct message, the image has more subtle aspects: the light reflected off the rocks in the shadows of the face and torso; the points of light in the dark water; and tiny bits of detail that punctuate each texture. The predominant lines of the composition are diagonal from the upper left to lower right. The undulating contours of the nude body roughly parallel the striations in the rock. A dense triangle dominates the upper right of the image, balanced with approximately equal amounts of shadow in the remained of the composition.

The treatment of the woman’s face is unorthodox in several ways. Her face is only partly visible, the angle of view showing the underside of her chin and hints of her features. The majority of her face is in shadow. Regardless of these factors, her beauty is evident.

The departure from traditional photography is small but distinct. What appears to be a purely black and white erotic photograph is punctuated with tones of browns and blues. Unsharp details at the periphery alter our perception of depth, giving the composition a fairy-tale quality.

On further examination, the surface of the square has a rough texture like that of a carpet, juxtaposing the soft, smooth surface of the models standing before it.

The power dynamic between the two figures is strong. While the disciple grasps the jeans, her gaze into the duchess’ eyes reveals her is under the taller woman’s guidance. The duchess’ face is turned away from the viewer, but her head is cast downward as she returns her companion’s beseeching glance. The standing model would be taller even if her disciple were to stand, reinforcing her gently powerful persona.

The disciple seems full of uncertainty, looking for wisdom in her counselor. The duchess places her hands firmly on the disciple with gentle affection. Rather than being a forceful figure, the viewer is given the impression that the duchess offers guidance to a willing adherent.
