Composition

The photograph is divided into horizontal bands, each region with its own tonal range and texture. The sky and water are similar in appearance, as the two brightest bands of tonality in the image. These two bright areas are separated by a dark wedge of land at the horizon. The lower portion of the image is dense with rich tones and occupies the majority of the space. This dark area surrounds the two women which emphasizes their lighter tonality. The foreground is unoccupied by people or vegetation, an unobstructed view that implies a familiarity with the subjects.

The subjects’ long hair has a texture that mimics that of the cordgrass. The mud is comparably smooth in texture, as are their bodies. Mud is visible on considerable portions of their skin.

Their focus is split between one another and their immediate surroundings. This is evident in their body language and angle of their heads. Their gaze is cast downward.

Seemingly simple, the arrangement is more than just four unclothed figures. There is an array of details and distinctions amongst the torsos, arms, and hair. The repetition of the forms and the balance in the image’s composition draws the viewer’s attention to the subtle differences in the women’s’ poses. One’s eye is drawn to the shimmering detail in the hair and the delicate texture of the figures’ skin, which is captured in brilliant sunlight.

The figures are surrounded by a balanced, harmonious, natural environment. A strong horizontal line across the image is created by a stretch of vegetation. Greenery and its dark blue shadow draw straight, colored lines across the center of the image, dividing it in half. Dark green trees dot the distant horizon. The upper portion of the image is filled with a cloudless sky of gradient blues. The lower half is a richly colorful pattern of ripples. In fact, the majority of the subject’s body is cloaked in darkness, revealing enough to spark intrigue that may keep viewers returning to the image.

The gentle waterfalls behind her glisten and the turbulence sparkles in the afternoon light. There is a softness to the natural backdrop that draws attention to the primary subject. Although the background is dominated by the grey rocks of the streambed, it still glows with warm tones. The scene appears innocent, bucolic and nostalgic, as though from a simpler time or a fairy tale.

Hope is at home in this familiar locality, enjoying the cool spring runoff of the river and the warm sunshine. She is at rest, but there is tension in her arms, braced against the wet rocks. The female nude in nature has long been a favorite theme of painters, illustrators, and photographers throughout the history of art. This image is reminiscent of depictions of Daphne, a naiad, or nymph, associated with fountains, wells, springs, streams, brooks and other bodies of freshwater. Pursued by the amorous god Apollo, Daphne begged her father, the river god, for help. He transformed her into a laurel tree to protect her from Apollo.

Even shallow water has great visual depth, and a range of colors and tones form a multitude of shapes. With the light coming from behind, the nude in the landscape is rimmed with a halo and appears stark against the brilliant reflection of the sky in the water. The tranquil mountain creeks of the Ozarks are soothing in sight and sound. The light filtering through the trees dances in a pattern of organic shapes, accenting the environment with flickering highlights.
