The subject’s facial expression is pensive and her gaze rests up and to the left, avoiding eye contact with the viewer.

The composition is largely symmetrical, with a series of horizontal patterns and lines drawing the eye always back to the subject. The repeating patterns of the brick wall in the background and the tufting of the sofa combine with the angular lines of the furniture’s overall shape to reinforce this horizontal visual pathway. The subject’s thighs and shoulders create yet more parallel lines. As the brick wall hints, this image was photographed in a repurposed industrial building in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The subject’s torso leans slightly to her right, with her head tilted gently to her left. Her thick hair is swept over one shoulder, balancing her pose. The limited-edition photograph is monochromatic, which, in combination with the spartan setting, serves to remove distractions and allow the viewer to fully focus on and appreciate the subject’s form. The quality of the light and the decision to shoot on film give this image a soft painterly effect, with only a few dark areas to provide contrast.

Composition

A woman clings to an A-frame ladder. Her familiar pose as well as her pleasant facial expression and eye contact allude to conventional pinup.

However, the entire right half of the image is left jarringly blank, while the ladder and the subject’s body form a condensed zig-zag within the left half. No line in the image aligns with the outer frame, and her hand, just out of view at the top, only heightens curiosity about the incongruity of this composition. The framing, although obviously premeditated feels haphazard. It is an act of visual rebelion, flaunting convention.

Bright light radiates from the background, with the subject’s right side almost blending into the wall. However, subtle shadows reveal the contours of her body, and a few dark areas provide just enough tonal contrast.

Her curvy, organic form contrasts against the nearly empty background planes and the angular, industrial ladder. A wall outlet and three small boxes break up the negative space behind her with small points of interest.

Subject and theme

Brooke is nude except for a key hanging around her neck. An echo of Fourth of July swimwear is visible through tanlines. No Photoshop or digital processing was used to create this image, the subject is shown more or less as she appeared in the moment. Visible are tan lines, dust on the floor, and folds in the upholstery.
