Light coming from the right defines the center line of her torso with highlights. Her gray figure stands out against the lighter and darker tones around her. The central placement of the two subjects and lack of background details creates a sense of immediacy and a tribute to beauty.

She is in a dark room with no discernible background. She lifts one heel from the ground. The weight of the board rests carefully against her chest and arms, braced on the floor. She leans into the plank, as they rest in a delicate equilibrium.

There is a prophetic element to this abandoned property. She stands at the threshold of the darkness. Her peachy tones glow against the drab recesses of the home. Her downward glance foreshadows an impending ebbing into the unknown.

Although she looks down and away, her face halfway visible, her expression reads strong emotion and intention. She is standing tall, stretching her body into a vertical line, as if against a wall. Her face and posture signal resolve and self-determination in the face of this foreboding.

An old brick props the door half-way open. The entire structure is faded, the weathered wood is mostly gray, with remnants of paint and its original natural color. In a window at the right, partially open blinds are bent beyond functionality.

A board, inside the house, leans up against the window at the left of the composition. The upper part of this window reflects bright sky and green trees, and is the most vibrant part of the scenery.

Dead vines, dried on the siding, underscore the dilapidated state of the building. Mossy red brick steps are below her feet, and wood rot is visible at the foundation. Despite the state of her surroundings, there is an uplifting, nostalgic, confident spirit to this artwork.

She stands on one foot, and the toes of her other foot are perched on top of it. The remainder of her weight is supported by her arms, delicately gripping the ropes above her head. She wraps three fingers and a thumb around each descending length of braided Manila rope. Her index fingers point upward.

The image is symmetrical aside from small variances in her stance and the curvature of the ropes. The cropping leaves enough margin so as not to crowd the figure, giving a sense of distance. However, we are unable to see enough of the scene for further context. A cool, purplish shadow runs horizontally, from edge to edge, near her feet.

Theme

Rays of golden light extend through the background, near the woman’s upper torso. The resulting mess can be quite beautiful. The birds-eye vantage point adds another degree of peculiarity to this relatable scene.

There is a crisp nature to the forms and edges within the composition, giving a surreal documentary feel to the presentation. An eerie stillness influences the mood. The artwork is a blend of the familiar and the unfamiliar.

Her body is contorted, with her chest to the ground and her head turned to be visible. Her hips and feet are raised high and she puts weight on her knees. With her arms tucked under her collar bone she seems to inch across the desert sand.

Sand clings to the backs of her arm and her dorsal side, evidence of prior maneuvers through the terrain. These particles of white gypsum sticking to her skin create a pattern that helps to visually relate her body to her environment, The crisp figure stands out against the hazy distance.

The lower portion of the image is featureless sand, topped by the crawling figure. Behind her is her trail of indentations through the sand. The horizon is defined by darker tones in the form of grey-blue hills. These tall dunes appear at various distances, illustrating the vastness of the desert.
