The act of swimming in a pool is both exotic and domestic. The swimmer’s snaking body bridges from the familiar into a dream. She expresses sensuality through the complete freedom of swimming nude. Her theatrical posture displays her curvaceous body.

We see only half of her upturned face; and just enough of a smile to convey a mood. Her features are framed by dark hair, drifting directionlessly. Ripples are absent around her body. There is no discernable indication of movement. A stray bubble can be spotted here and there. Her shadow blends with the other shapes to the right of her figure.

Refracting light leaves a fascinating pattern of interconnected light ribbons across her submerged body. Her face, shoulder, breast, and hip are the only parts of her that break the surface. One calf crosses over the other, and her knees drift apart. Her arms are static ballasts for her floating body.

She floats at a shallow depth; there is little distortion to the contours of her nude body. The warm caramel-cream colors of the body contrast scriply against the deep blue and sparkling highlights of the water. The contrasting colors gives this artistic erotic photography an immediate impact in a small image.

Playful, colorful, and nuanced, this design has an obscured sensuality. Her stance enhances her curves, and display her comfort with nakedness.  The nude woman’s pose would be explicit if it were not for the ripples washing over her. She seems at once aware and unconcerned at being observed. The myriad textures and details invite the viewer to continually explore the image.

There is a peculiar bend to her nude body. It seems she is turning, as if to avoid an obstacle. One ponders if her destination is uncertain, changing, or if she is meandering for the sheer joy of it. The bend also emphasizes her curves, and there is no denying an inherent eroticism to the artwork. With the swimmer turned away from us, the feeling is voyeuristic.

The source of her determination is ambiguous, only that she is devoting tremendous energy to her movements. Her legs kick, heels barely visible beneath white splashes. An outstretched arm plunge into the water with a burst. Jet-black hair glistens, swept back against her neck and shoulders.

Color plays an important role in this scene. The intensity of the blue is unreal. Bright plumes of splashes and foam surround the figure with explosive energy. The bronze skin hints at an exotic location and pairs with the deep blue water.

The image is populated by murky shapes beneath the surface. Whether these are shadows, reflections, or objects is unclear. Upon close inspection, her body is a series of jagged shapes. The form is disassembled by the refraction of the water. As with nude artwork, it is reassembled in our minds.

There are three vague layers to this image. A trio of horizontal swaths comprise the scene. The middle, and most defined, is the swimmer and the frothy white around her. Above are murky blues, accented by bits of green. Curious tendrils of light invade the upper left corner. In the lower portion, light blue, dappled shapes lurk beneath the surface. These echo the horizontal orientation of her body, but they are too large to be a submerged swimmer. These almost whale-like masses at the base of the image, especially the lower left, are an enigma.

Her body is framed by distinct areas of detail. A variety of control apparatus protrude from the left: a wooden steering wheel, some switches and dials, and shifter knob. Behind her, the running boards are accented by wooden rails. Behind her, tan upholstery gleams in the darkness. In the distance, hints of other automobiles interrupt the darkness.

The image recalls classic pinups as well as the history of visual pairing of female beauty with stylish automobiles. In advertising, editorial, and art nude photography, there has been a pairing of the female form with and cars back to the earliest years.

The cropping of the image centers attention of the statuesque subject. The car provides minor graphical elements and minimal context. This tendency to center on the body is characteristic of pinup images.

What most distinguishes the composition is a light-toned vertical pillar that disrupts the inky background. The inclusion of this element significantly alters the mood of the image. A viewer might initially dismiss this item as inconsequential. That is, until we imagine the image with a plain background. Without this visual ingredient, we’d have only a figure framed by a car, isolated in near darkness. The vertical pillar splits the background into two uneven sections, but it also does more. This obelisk introduces a midground, detailing depth beyond the sharp area of focus. This component also connects the foreground to the top of the frame.  The depth and complexity added by this one element grants the photograph much its general demeanor.

Pinup art photography features women, posed in a playful and often alluring manner. Automobiles can be used as props or backdrops in nude art photography to add visual interest and to create a particular mood or theme. For example, an automobile might evoke a sense of freedom or adventure and create a retro or vintage pinup feel. The automobile itself is a focus of the photograph, adding to the overall aesthetic of the image. Additionally, automobiles evoke movement and dynamism in a photograph.

The car is a 1961 Morgan 4/4. Fewer than a hundred of the series III were made, all by hand; so like the figure who inhabits it, it is one of a kind. Compare this affordable art nude photography to another automotive pinup nude with the same woman on a different automobile.

The nude woman is submerged, but only shallowly. The emphasis of this artwork is not on depth, but on the patterns. The snaking highlights on the water’s surface encase the outstretched figure. Rather than portraying a specific person and place, this image intends to exist in the viewer’s mind.

She makes no attempt at modesty, nor does she tantalize the viewer. She is unconcerned with the viewer. Her pose is effortless and expresses a laid-back attitude. Her serene expression and smoothly flowing hair affirm this emotion.

The colors of the water in this artwork are reminiscent of Lake Tahoe and Saint Lucia. Fiction relies on piecing together shreds of shared memories to form a narrative. Bright, clear blue waters evoke feelings of indulgence and luxury.  However, contrary to the material extravagance implied by the title, this image is devoid of material assets. Instead, it relies on the soothing colors to set a mood of freedom and contentment.

In the realm of female nude photography, the subject matter can range from pinup to fine art. This image resides somewhere in between. The composition celebrates the beauty of the form in a subdued way. Her allure is undeniable but presented as one portion of her entire presence.

Composition

The negative space (blank region) grows darker near her feet, at the top of the image, though it’s still far from black. Her legs and hips form a teardrop shape. Cool tones pervade but give way to hints of warmth in this otherwise monochromatic composition. There is a sense of peace, equilibrium, and thinly veiled eroticism. If any small detail were altered, the balanced atmosphere of the image would be dramatically shifted.

The overall tonal contrast of the photograph is low. However, the figure stands out starkly in the expanse of flat gray negative space. Slight shadows and highlights form a halo effect around the contours of the body.

Black and white palette

In this photograph, the light-toned female body plays a central role. The chosen presentation is provocatively erotic, yet without being explicit; arresting without being scandalous. Although the central element is eroticism, the most erotic parts of the anatomy are concealed. Portions near the top and throughout the image approach a deep black. The densest tones inhabit the upper left corner of the artwork. Highlights of white linger on the surface. These contrasting tones intermingle along the borders between light and dark areas of the photograph.

In this artwork, the woman’s body is inverted with no solid point of reference in the water. Her feet are near the top of the frame and her head is at the bottom, closest to the viewer. With no horizon, sky, or land in sight, her location is ambiguous. Her form recedes into the texture of the waves as drops of water rain down. The soothing warmth of sunlight radiates from her skin.

The overall mood of this art photograph is uplifting. There is also a hint of seriousness, due to the weight of the darks in the composition. At its core, this is a celebration of beauty in an art piece that strives to balance the presentation of the body with the visual appeal of patterns and aesthetic design.

Aaron Knight’s goal in creating this photograph was an impressionistic nude artwork that celebrated the body in a less obvious way. The subject’s partial submersion and angle of her body pursue this goal by balancing the nudity with a slight veil of modesty, yet without apologizing for the unclad female body.

The body is horizontal, approximately through the center of the composition. Square stone tiles form grid lines, framed by diagonal patches of darkness in the corners. The shadows in the upper corners imply a triangle with the shadow that runs through the body serving as the third side. The bottom border of shadows runs more or less horizontally, repeating the direction of the body.

The classic black and white nude draws the viewer’s attention to the abstract composition. Heavy shadow defines her right side and thigh. Her face is obscured, as is much of her body, making her somewhat anonymous. The pattern of shadow across her body disrupts half of her contours.

Close to monochromatic, the image is not pure black and white. Subtle cool tones of purple punctuate the shadows and warmer accents are in the highlights. Although color may be able to seduce a wider audience, the lover of black and white nude photography has an appreciation that runs deep.

The setting is comprised of two trolley cars that had been set together as a dwelling after retiring from transit service in 1930s Charleston, South Carolina. After the American Civil War, iron tracks lined the town’s streets for the cars, which were initially horse-drawn. The last year that Charleston used electric streetcars for municipal transport was 1938.

At the time that I photographed them, the cars were in a vast, desolate vacant lot. Unfortunately, these specimens suffered years of vandalism. The owners have since removed the cars from this location.  They are scheduled for restoration as a historical display.

The single nude woman stands in the window of one car. The second car is visible through the window on the far wall, behind her. The setting provokes thoughts of what experiences and sights, including photography, must have happened in and around the cars over many generations. This environment is an unlikely one for contemporary erotic art photography, bringing a bit of visual irony to the image.

The pose is matter-of-fact: she stands to face the viewer, hips and shoulders aligned. But, she has turned her attention away, as if to notice something suddenly happening nearby. She expresses an overall calmness and curiosity. The unabashed expression and pose portray a high level of self-confidence and positivity. Her long hair recalls the femininity of a classic pinup, yet her athletic figure is a more modern adaptation.

Artist Aaron Knight has performed a degree of urban exploration (urbex) to shoot art nude photographs. There is something seductive about abandoned places. They connect the viewer to the past, reminding us of change, and challenge the idea of permanency. The textures and forms that he can discover through urban exploration offer intriguing combinations and contrasts to the female form.

Just before the artist entered art school, he saw an exhibit of the Jaguar E-type at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Although initially skeptical, he learned to appreciate product design as an art form. With a newfound respect for automobile designers, the artist was inspired to include car bodies in his artwork. Similarly, there was a time he did not consider the pinup nude to be worthy of study as an art form, but the work of Hajime Sorayama changed his mind about that as well.

The lines of the vintage Jaguar E-type convertible drophead coupe are considered by some, including rival founder Enzo Ferrari, to have created the most beautiful automobile in the world. The woman in this pinup image has also received accolades for her poise and elegance. The combined inspiration led to this pinup nude/automobile pairing. As with the car, the beauty of her body is due to the way the lines work proportionally and in concert, rather than the sum of her curves.

The use of negative space sets up a wedge-shaped composition where the sports car and nude woman inject themselves as glowing curves in the darkness. The angle of view is subtly low, bringing the viewer into the contours of the automobile and the figure rather than gazing down on them.

Small details in this image include wire-spoke wheels, and the array of patterns from the floor to the engine bay.

This artwork has been purchased by collectors in Texas, Missouri, Japan, and Belgium. It is often paired with a motorcycle pinup nude photograph of the same woman.
