Nude art photo

An expanse of clear, blue water fills the frame of this nude art photo. A woman’s figure glides face-down through the jewel-like pool. She appears to slide across the image from right to left. Her body is straight with her legs extended and her toes pointed. Her arms are down by her side with her hands elegantly angled outward. Only her golden head breaks the surface of the water. Her blond hair is slicked back over her head, with its ends fanning out over her submerged back.

The figure’s face is shown in profile: calm, eyelids low, focused. She does not appear to notice or perform for the camera. It is as though she is in her own world, calmly drifting across the glistening pool.

The title, “Sapphire” is drawn from the rich, blue color of the water surrounding the figure. While she is the focal point of the nude art photo, the swirling water surrounding her is visually interesting. Light mixes with blue to create dizzying swirls and patterns. Sunlight glints off the surface. Hazy patches surround the figure’s feet and shoulders. Her body is a warm, glowing, golden peach color in contrast to the cool blue hues surrounding her. The crests, curls, swells, and surges of the water form a texture that blurs the details of her body, which is just under the surface.

This is a nude art photo of arrested motion. The figure appears perfectly still, as though she is suspended in the water. But the water surrounding her arms and upper body is disturbed, registering the movement of her arms sweeping down from above her head to draw her forward through the pool. The image captures a single moment in time. Yet through the impression of motion on the environment, it alludes to the moment before, and perhaps the moment after as well.
