Composition

Rendered in vivid colors, the photos strike a balance between idealized and realistic, situating them within the longstanding artistic tradition of depicting the feminine figure.

Every photo’s aerial perspective presents the viewer with a visual paradox—unlike grounded observers, we’re granted the sensation of divine viewpoint over each scene. This physical distance allows us to witness arrangements we normally couldn’t at eye level.

To continue to evolve and be creative as an artist means giving oneself new challenges. Sometimes, these challenges mean imposing new rules on oneself, or changing the creative approach altogether. Vantage Overhead is one such approach, requiring a new way of composing. For the artist, it means starting over, exploring various possibilities (often through trial and error), and discovering new things.

The unexpected overhead viewpoint can dispel preconceptions and provide an arresting image. The bird’s-eye aesthetic also allows for more stylized presentations that highlight each model’s unique attributes. Colorful accessories infuse liveliness into the photos, directing our attention toward their bold focal points. Usually expressing sensuality, the women in this series are captivatingly resilient and autonomous. Their nakedness amidst an array of belongings, including the occasional article of clothing, is an expression of continued vigor.

Composition

The color palette is overwhelmingly warm, dominated by the brown, peach, orange, and creamy off-white tones of the floor and bodies. The three oranges provide bright points of interest; however, these tend to blend into the background. The green apples, by contrast, stand out against the warm colors, providing a visual anchor against the surrounding soft tones.

The primary activity in this image is the nude woman throwing an orange in the direction of the viewer. The orange is depicted mid-air, close enough that it appears similar in size to her head. In her other hand she holds a brown paper grocery bag.

Composition

This peculiar visual story is told from a perspective of being directly overhead and looking straight down. Gazing directly down at the floor is an immediately obvious distinction. In addition to the visual novelty, this angle of view has the narrative effect of showing us the entire scene of the woman and her immediate surroundings. The lack of depth from this perspective limits our knowledge of her surroundings. This takes away any context of whether she is in a domestic kitchen, a diner, or a shop.

The color palette of this composition is heavily dominated by warm tones of orange, tan, and brown. The brightest and lightest of these colors include her golden hair and the yellow gelatin. The darkest tones include the shadows around her figure and the grout lines in the vinyl floor pattern. The nostalgic patterns and colors place the time period of the image decades into the past.

Theme

The bizarre mix of a vintage German movie camera, a woman in a pinup pose, a chilled dessert, and a backdrop of gaudy vinyl flooring leaves us to ponder a variety of absurd mysteries.
