In this contemporary art photograph, identical twin females swim jovially in the nude. Their sisterly relationship leaves no question they intend nothing more than to experience freedom in this swimming pool.
The closer figure swims horizontally in the direction of the image frame. She stretches her arms out wide and kicks her legs out behind her, treading water. The further woman stands behind her. Ripples indicate their degrees of motion.
Composition
The environment is dreamlike. Bright light on their faces, paired with murky shadows, imparts a surreal nature. Their faces and shoulder above the water are their only distinct features. The dark teal water is an almost foreign color, an unlikely complement to their salmon-toned bodies.
Steps radiate from the upper left corner. The concentric arcs occupy a quadrant of the otherwise hazy composition. A hint of stone in the corner adds a new color and texture. The remainder of the image is distorted by waves.
Both women’s gazes are directed downward, their eyes hidden. Their hair is similarly slicked back, evidence that their identical nature extends to their movements. Both of their nude bodies are submerged to some degree. The foreground figure is more visible than the one behind her.
Distinct aspects of this piece, contrasted to other contemporary artistic nudes, include the color pallete, arrangement of the figures, and the odd assortment of shapes and textures.
