Two halves of a square form the background for this instance of artistic nude photography. A golden figure reaches for the top of a concrete surface. Above, rich blue sky creates contrast. The division is nearly straight and centered. Her head protrudes into the blue half. Her back and posterior cast a strong shadow in the foreground.

This formal composition, and the choice of a square format, mix a sense of contemplation with artistic nude photography. Her rigid stance echos the fixed nature of the concrete.

The woman’s face is hidden in mystery, a hint of her features gives indications of her mind and spirit. It is mostly through body language that we learn about her. She is pressed to the surface, back curved, chin raised. We are left to wonder where she is and what the concrete surface is part of.

A variety of details punctuate this composition. Texture, lines, cracks, and pocks accent the concrete. The figure’s backside is dusted with sand. Her hair creates a focal point with it’s texture. Her head is tilted toward the sky and as if observing. Faint clouds streak through the smooth vault of blue. A diagonal line of cloud implies the trail of an airplane.

Her body’s vibrant color stands out against the neutral backdrop. This is balanced by the intensity of the sky above.

Distinctions

Anonymity is not unknown in artistic nude photography. However, in the work of Aaron Knight, it is the exception. Additionally, the majority of his work is rectangular, and this composition is a square.

Other artistic nude photography to consider

The overall mood of the artwork is static, balanced with vertical and horizontal divisions of the square. Compare this to a dynamic square image of the same female subject, this artwork of a dancer leaping in the air.

In this black and white photograph of a nude woman, a slender female subject lounges cat-like among the dramatic shadows of palm fronds. The line created by her body and her extended leg and forearm echoes the spine of the palm frond shadow that cuts diagonally through the bottom of the frame. The individual leaflet shadows create tiger stripes on her body, further reinforcing her feline appearance.

The subject’s pageboy haircut is mussed, short dark hair covering her eyes and nose but leaving her lush, open lips visible as she turns her face towards the viewer. Her forearms rest flat on the ground, with her shoulders over her elbows in a posture similar to The Sphinx. Her left leg is folded across under her body with her knee bent, while her right leg extends straight all the way through her pointed toes.

The shadows of the palms form a series of triangles of sunlight, providing a deep contrast on the smooth, tiled surface of the ground. The subject rests in the largest triangle of sunlight, while the points of the leaflet shadows create a dynamic rotational symmetry around her form, leading the eye in a circular motion.

Her pose precludes the nude photograph from being explicit, although it is still erotic and sensual. Her seductive pose invites the viewer into an interaction, although her hidden eyes and slack mouth suggest indifference to the viewer’s opinion. She looks as though perhaps she was awoken from a catnap in the shade and is investigating the interruption, or maybe she is preparing to warm herself on the sun-baked tiles.

The black and white photograph of a nude woman is essentially monochromatic, which makes the contrast between the shadows and sunlight that play over the subject’s body and the ground all that more dramatic. No colors are present to distract from the appreciation of nude woman’s shapes and lines: her lithe curves, the spiny shadows, and the grounding grid of the tiles.

Considerations

The visual treatment image is a slight departure from highly detailed photographic representations of the body. In the shadow areas, detail gives way to faintly gritty dots and grains. This can be seen by examining each product image close up.

Ed 4, Oversized: 32×48 inches/81×122 cm

Ed 3 + 1AP, Mammoth: 40×60 inches/102×152 cm

This oversized nude photograph makes a statement, bursting with energy in tones of electric blues and effervescent whites. Sweeping lines radiate out from the diver. Plunging into the water is a metaphor for a sudden transition, undertaken with abandon just short of recklessness. It is a celebration of exhilaration, a carefree lifestyle where one reaps the rewards of taking risks while others stand on the sidelines. Whether you bask in the pleasure of adventure or purely enjoy dreaming of daring exploits, this oversized nude photograph applauds a lifestyle that is unafraid of experiences. This is a centerpiece oversized nude photograph that is sure to command visual attention.

Only half of the figure, from posterior to toe, is visible; the rest of the figure has plunged into the water. The legs are rendered in a rosy warmth. Her body is lean and toned, with her ethnicity somewhat enigmatic. Central to the intensity of the image are kinetic and temporal elements: this is a body in motion, action precedes the current moment, and more is to come. It is undeniably a moment of transition.

Upon close inspection, her upper body and hair are vaguely visible where they dissolve into the blue.

The athletic figure and focus on the buttocks are decidedly erotic, but careful placement of water and reflections prevent this oversized nude photograph from being explicit. The amount of space occupied by the figure is deceptively small, but not lost in the large scale of the image. Emphasis remains on the body due to the simplicity of the negative space.

The artist has myriad influences for composition, mostly from paintings, but chiefly David Hockney’s painting, A Bigger Splash. However, this image diverges in the absence of California luxury or any exotic reference. The feelings of abundance and well-being are conveyed through the clarity and intensity of the color rather than the trappings of physical possessions portrayed in Hockney’s painting.

If you seek a large-scale nude photograph, with similar colors, try this contemporary nude art.

This original art nude photograph depicts four figures standing in a line, thigh deep in water. They are nearly shoulder to shoulder, equally spaced across the image. They face away from the viewer, looking into the distance across an expanse of water. Each has her long, blond hair pulled over her right shoulder, flowing down her side. Three of the figures are nearly identical in stance and height. They lift their arms above their heads in various poses. The fourth stands out as taller than the others. She poses differently, with her body angled slightly to the right and her arms lifted at chest height.

The details in this composition are neither modest nor overpoweringly sensual. Although somewhat reserved when viewed from a distance, upon close inspection, it is revealed that there is somewhat a lack of modesty in this artistic depiction of the nude form.

More than a nude photograph

Seemingly simple, the arrangement is more than just four unclothed figures. There is an array of details and distinctions amongst the torsos, arms, and hair. The repetition of the forms and the balance in the image’s composition draws the viewer’s attention to the subtle differences in the women’s’ poses. One’s eye is drawn to the shimmering detail in the hair and the delicate texture of the figures’ skin, which is captured in brilliant sunlight.

The figures are surrounded by a balanced, harmonious, natural environment. A strong horizontal line across the image is created by a stretch of vegetation. Greenery and its dark blue shadow draw straight, colored lines across the center of the image, dividing it in half. Dark green trees dot the distant horizon. The upper portion of the image is filled with a cloudless sky of gradient blues. The lower half is a richly colorful pattern of ripples. The water reflects the blue sky and the reflections of the four bodies. The peachy, warm tones of their reflections swirl and mix with the cool blue of the water.

Original art

Depicting nude women in a landscape has a long tradition in art history. In this original art nude photograph, the repetition of the figures is reminiscent of the three graces from classical mythology, a theme painted by artists such as Sandro Boticelli and Raphael.

Considerations

Although the eroticism of this image is not readily apparent, it is not a modest image. These aspects can be examined prior to purchase by fully zooming in on each preview.

This art photograph is a theatrical depiction of a mysterious nude swimmer. In an eruption of bubbles and whitecaps, she powers through the water. The nude woman pursues a destination outside our view. With her back to us, she is anonymous. The viewer is left to ponder the unknown. This photograph relies a mixture of certainty and uncertainty. Given partial information, the viewer’s mind pieces together a story.

There is a peculiar bend to her nude body. It seems she is turning, as if to avoid an obstacle. One ponders if her destination is uncertain, changing, or if she is meandering for the sheer joy of it. The bend also emphasizes her curves, and there is no denying an inherent eroticism to the artwork. With the swimmer turned away from us, the feeling is voyeuristic.

The source of her determination is ambiguous, only that she is devoting tremendous energy to her movements. Her legs kick, heels barely visible beneath white splashes. An outstretched arm plunge into the water with a burst. Jet-black hair glistens, swept back against her neck and shoulders.

Color plays an important role in this scene. The intensity of the blue is unreal. Bright plumes of splashes and foam surround the figure with explosive energy. The bronze skin hints at an exotic location and pairs with the deep blue water.

The image is populated by murky shapes beneath the surface. Whether these are shadows, reflections, or objects is unclear. Upon close inspection, her body is a series of jagged shapes. The form is disassembled by the refraction of the water. As with nude artwork, it is reassembled in our minds.

There are three vague layers to this image. A trio of horizontal swaths comprise the scene. The middle, and most defined, is the swimmer and the frothy white around her. Above are murky blues, accented by bits of green. Curious tendrils of light invade the upper left corner. In the lower portion, light blue, dappled shapes lurk beneath the surface. These echo the horizontal orientation of her body, but they are too large to be a submerged swimmer. These almost whale-like masses at the base of the image, especially the lower left, are an enigma.

This nude artwork was chosen for Best of PhotoVogue by the photo editors of Vogue.

This fine art nude photograph of a nude swimmer depicts a golden figure in sapphire blue water. The appeal of this image goes beyond the aesthetic. Although they are implied, one cannot deny its seductive and theatrical qualities. The cropping of the image is close. This nude swimmer passes at a conversational distance. We view her through the eyes of a companion, rather than as a stranger.

Ava knows a secret. Looking for something too specific is rarely fruitful. Embrace life and your many options. What’s missing from happiness is usually yourself. She enjoys her immediate surroundings and they become her world. Some people are so afraid of life that they avoid most of it. The nude woman is immersed, literally and figuratively, in the joy of the moment.

In this fine art nude photography of a swimmer, we sense she is smiling, even if we can’t see her face. Too many people seek happiness when what they want is fulfillment. A fulfilling life is not a string of happy moments. A swim is a journey for its own sake, rather than to reach a destination. Despite a sense of indulgence, the image implies a yearning. This sense is imparted by her outstretched arm and the distant nature of the subject being turned away.

Her body is mostly under the water and therefore distorted. Water has no single visual form. The human body, on the other hand, follows a specific formula. Here, the two notions collide and contradict. This allows the viewer to imagine as much as they want of what is really present.

She reaches out of the water, her hand and arm blur with motion. The gesture of the raised arm is central to the theme. Along with her head, it indicates the direction of her attention. The woman’s turned head and the ripples from her body also hint at her quiet motion. One can imagine the sounds of the water filling a quiet, warm afternoon.

The outstretched arm points into the distance. The portion of the artwork above the nude swimmer contains a dark corner. Both of these hint at something beyond the picture’s edge. The “beyond” is in her thoughts.

Encircling the figure is a web-like pattern of reflections. This pattern is unbroken in front of her and the arc of areas where she has not been. Behind her, the water is clearly disturbed, evidence of her travels.

This fine art nude photography was chosen by the editors at Vogue for the Photovogue showcase.

Compare this image to a larger contemporary nude photograph, which presents a different figure in a frontal, vertical orientation.

Considerations

The electric blue and bright turquoise colors of the water in this artwork are beyond the limitations of most digital devices. Some colors in the physical artwork will likely appear more intense than as shown on your screen.

A woman lays face down, wearing only shadows. A pattern of shadow in natural light cloaks her nude body. Her body is elongated and shapely. The technique is toned black-and-white art nude photography.

The stripes over her body create a zebra-like pattern. The alternating pattern of light and dark obscures the contours of her figure. Dots of light form a line down the center of the frond shadow that parallels her body. This line of dots resembles the vertebrae of a human spine.

She is mostly anonymous. Her face is obscured with shadow and her black hair fuses with the shadows. No distinguishing marks or unique characteristics are immediately evident.

This variation of black-and-white art nude photography employs a mix of cool and warm tones. Cool tones of bluish to purplish-gray inhabit the shadows. In contrast, the highlights are warmly golden. On the texture of the stone, this creates a patina effect. Within the body, the effect is to enhance the dimensionality. Warm tones tend to protrude to the viewer, while cooler ones recede. This follows the norms of atmospheric perspective.

The overall mood of this black-and-white art nude photography image is sensual but subtly so. The static pose is devoid of kinetic energy. The partly obscured body invites contemplation rather than overwhelming the viewer with sensation. Visible are her back, buttocks, arms, legs, and a portion of one breast. The arcs of the shadows define the form of her limbs and curves.

The image has a slightly retro, gritty feel to it. The texture of the skin mostly gives way to smooth areas of light and dark. Grains of sand on her back and lines in the palm of her hand are slightly visible. With the scale of this image, the emphasis is more on form rather than minute detail.

Diagonal lines create a degree of visual tension. The primary subject angles from the lower right to the upper left. Similarly, the seems of the tiles follow lines that are parallel and perpendicular to that line.

In this underwater photograph, columns of bubbles rise from a nude woman’s palms as her face peeks above the surface. Hints of her face are barely discernible through the rippling reflections.

Composition

Brilliant fuchsia and copper are mirrored above her torso and her body is surrounded by a deep turquoise. The composition is divided into a tranquil lower portion of negative space and an active upper portion full of color and energy.

Her arms thrust downward while one foot extends towards the surface. Her toes point in opposite directions, each extending the line of its respective calf. Her ribs, knee, and torso are all delicately defined by warm tones that contrast with the calm aquamarine backdrop.

The character of this photograph is distinguished by the mottled, grainy texture that builds its colors. The texture is reminiscent of high-speed film from traditional photography.

Theme

From a submerged vantage point, we see two worlds and the barrier between them. Although there is no wall between air and water, the mirror-like surface, when viewed from below, turns the underwater world into an isolated space. From our point of view, we see only the swimmer and her reflection, leaving her view and the world above to our imagination.

Considerations

This image is a departure from Knight’s primary style. Throughout this artwork is a soft grainy/gritty effect. This effect is most pronounced in the corners. These aspects can be examined prior to purchase by fully zooming in on each preview.

This is a picture-within-a-picture; the nude figure produces a second image in pencil, in the form of a self portrait. A blonde, bright female form stands out from the neutral tones of this whimsical display. Her face is completely obscured by her platinum hair, rendering her playfully enigmatic. She concentrates on her artistic task of creating a precise pencil self-portrait. Her identical twin, also holding a pencil, recalls M. C. Escher’s pair of self-drawing hands, reflecting on the concepts of infinity and self-identity.

The pencil portion of the image is heavily distorted by perspective, commenting on the nature of context. From her vantage point, the drawing would appear to duplicate what we see from our vantage point. Although she doesn’t directly connect with the viewer, her knowledge of our presence is displayed by her drawn self portrait from this angle of view. Compared to her drawing, she appears three-dimensional in this two-dimensional photography. This concept reflects on the nature of reality, art as illusion, questioning our own existence, and what does it mean for something to be real or a realistic proxy for what it represents.

The composition is based heavily on diagonals: her body, the pencil, the paper; lines converge at the tip of the pencil. Her back is a dramatically feminine curve that juxtaposes the many straight, diagonal lines. The steep gradient washing over the pencil contrasts with the soft lighting of the rest of the piece.

Most engaging is the fanciful mix of the surreal with the real. Her pose, particularly the angle of the pencil, is theatrical, lending itself to an engaging composition rather than realism. This contemporary nude art photography encourages the viewer to question the model’s identity, her pose and the disparity in scale. Although the figure and body language is distinctive, the overall effect is anonymous.

This original nude black and white photograph features a woman laying in the shadow of a palm tree. This body-scape artwork has her back turned towards us, one leg tucked under the other, an arm reached over her head. Hard leaf shadows in midday sun barely greet the edge of her body. A thick black shadow outlines the other edge of her body. Although this style of photographic image is often referred to as black and white, the composition is actually rendered in warm, almost monochromatic shades that approach sepia.

Various textures accent this black and white nude photograph. Small specks of sand stipple the subject’s back and the stone patio is dappled with water stains. The similarity between these two patterns plays a role in homogenizing the composition.

This original fine art nude black and white photograph deals with positive and negative space, form, and line. The curves of her body contrast with the angular shapes of the palm shadows. Both the body and the shadows are angled downward from right to left.

Her hips are higher in the picture plane than her head. The midrib of the palm frond is aligned with her spine. This visual agreement sets up an equilibrium between the body and the shadow.

The negative spaces between the leaf shadows are similar in shape to each other. This interplay between positive and negative space is another form of equilibrium.

Despite any academic or aesthetic conclusions the viewer may draw from this original fine art nude, the sensuality of the presentation is undeniable. The curve of the back and position of the legs emphasize the sweeping contour of the female body. Her derriere is turned to dramatize its voluptuousness.

Although we do not see her face, elements of the subject’s personality and intentions are evident. Her pose is tranquil, yet deliberate. Her outstretched hand indicates a clear intention to interact. Despite the restful implications of laying on the ground, the muscles in her back are tensed for activity.

This image was photographed at Harbour Island, The Bahamas.
