Underwater art photography shows a world that is somewhat alien to the viewer. Gone are the familiar behavior of light and gravity. Also absent are reference points like the sky and horizon. Forms are less distinct and the distance between the viewer and subject is emphasized by being able to see the effects of light in the water. Light follows its own rules in this subaquatic environment. Reflections and refractions create unexpected effects, in some cases we catch a glimpse of the world above, in the form of reflections where air meets water. Ribbons of light scatter on the floor of the pool, as well as the surface above. Dappled lighting covers the swimmers’ bodies. Bubbles of air rise, either resulting from dives or other turbulent maneuvers or from slowly exhaled breath. The bubbles glisten with light and cast shadows of their own.

Scenes play out beneath the surface, calling to mind impromptu games in the pool, performing underwater tricks and experimenting. A place without air can be serene and peaceful, but there is sometimes a ominous tone about this territory that we can only inhabit briefly.

Underwater fine art photography contains elements of movement, suggestions of disarray, and a distinctive color palette. Throughout each underwater artwork is a soft grainy/gritty textured effect. Dabs of color throughout the images are as reminiscent of paint as they are of photography.
