The coast provides a vast backdrop. A body covered in sand seems more animal in nature.  Sand can contrast or harmonize with the figure, based on the model’s skin tone.

The sea’s calming effects allow for Knight to completely concentrate on the composition. The effects of light on water offer endless possibilities of reflection and distortion. The sand and sea theme allows him to invite the viewer to places that only exist in his mind.
