Original Art Photography

A companion piece to Underwater Movie, this is original art photography featuring three female subjects. Two hold movie cameras; one filming the subject performing a backbend and the other filming the first filmer. The triad of figures echoes the three underwater surfaces: the bottom of the pool and two walls, delineated by shadows and refracted sunlight.

The image has an otherworldly feel, inhabiting underwater positions without an apparent need for air. The camerawoman on the right appears to float towards the surface, positioned above the pool bottom with her hair gliding below her body and her arm outstretched upward, bubbles indicating that she is releasing her held breath.

However, the camerawoman on the left appears to be sinking lower in the water, her feet and buttocks firmly anchored on the bottom and her hair trailing above her. The middle subject gives no such indications of motion, with her toes and fingertips brushing the pool’s floor and her hair swirling around her head.

The scene calls to mind free-spirited games in the pool, performing underwater tricks and experimenting with waterproof cameras to capture moments that are impossible on land. The three female figures are in their own submarine world, where only visual communication is possible. However, the group does not invite outside participation, as all three subjects have their faces turned away from the viewer.

This photograph has a soft, grainy effect which contributes to the evanescent feeling and retro style of the image. The cool blue underwater realm contrasts with the warm skin tones of the three divers. Highlights and shadows play over the subjects as well as the bottom and walls of the pool.

The inclusion of two movie cameras invites the viewer to ponder what’s happening in this original art photography. One subject films another who films a third, and all three are captured by the artist. The plot of the sequel is left to the viewer’s imagination.

Considerations

This image is a departure from Knight’s primary style. Throughout this artwork is a soft grainy/gritty effect. This effect is most pronounced in the corners. These aspects can be examined prior to purchase by fully zooming in on each preview.
