She lays with one arm over her eyes; this is the chief emotional take-away from the image. This may signify she is shading her eyes from bright sun, but the metaphorical impact is deeper. Without the opportunity to connect visually through eye-contact, her posture conveys a sense of comfort with the display of her nudity.

Her legs are lifted playfully against the wall, fitting her contour into the square format of the image. Her front leg is bent more than the back one, resulting in a stacking of her feet, one higher than the other.

The woman’s dark body contrasts starkly with the pale, almost featureless expanse of near-white background. This shallow environment she occupies contains a horizontal line which runs almost the full width of the image. Another horizontal line, where the floor meets the wall, creates a parallel division. These two lines divide the backdrop roughly into thirds, giving the design a sense of order. A vertical line in the upper left corner unbalances that sense of oder. An additional unbalancing feature is her hand, which extends closer to the left edge of the image than her head does to the right edge. This means her body is visually shifted to just left of center in the frame. The shift of her body and the inclusion of the vertical line in the otherwise empty upper right corner create a sort of imperfect rebalancing. The slightly asymmetrical image is more energetic than if it were perfectly centered against a uniform background.

Half of her face is hidden, but she is not faceless.

The woman’s face is hidden in mystery, a hint of her features gives indications of her mind and spirit. It is mostly through body language that we learn about her. She is pressed to the surface, back curved, chin raised. We are left to wonder where she is and what the concrete surface is part of.

A variety of details punctuate this composition. Texture, lines, cracks, and pocks accent the concrete. The figure’s backside is dusted with sand. Her hair creates a focal point with it’s texture. Her head is tilted toward the sky and as if observing. Faint clouds streak through the smooth vault of blue. A diagonal line of cloud implies the trail of an airplane.

Her body’s vibrant color stands out against the neutral backdrop. This is balanced by the intensity of the sky above.

Distinctions

Anonymity is not unknown in artistic nude photography. However, in the work of Aaron Knight, it is the exception. Additionally, the majority of his work is rectangular, and this composition is a square.

New York 1970s or SF last week?

The time and place of this black and white pinup is deliberately undefined. Other than the camera, there are few clues as to what era is depicted. The image could be a New York City loft in the 1970s. It could also be the 1960s or 1990s. Or it could be throwback style in San Francisco last week; or Los Angeles a year ago. This could even be London for all the lack of clues we are given. Tight cropping, with nothing shown in the background but the sofa and wall, helps accomplish this. Right down to the lack of pattern or other discerning detail on the fabric, the era and place of this black and white pinup remain enigmatic.

Her stare is level and unwavering. A hand clutches the opposite shoulder as she turns to steady her gaze. Her other hand rests on the arm of the chair. Around her neck a metal-ball chain suspends a key. What lock or door this instrument opens is a mystery.

The wall and floor are light grays, bordering on white. Little detail is evident in the floor, save faint seams between painted wood panels. A few scuffs and bits of debris tells a story of a previous refurbishment, followed by much use.

A black pipe and electrical cords at the right edge create a peculiar sense of balance in this relaxed composition. The angle of the floor is not quite horizontal. Although the various elements are static, nothing in the scene is quite square or seems fully resolved.

The composition houses an array of lines that depart from expectations. None of these lines: the union of the floor and wall, the pipe, chair legs, and the figure’s limbs,  align with the picture’s edges. This less obvious compositional choice imparts the spontaneous mood of an impromptu moment. The arrangement suggests as much a moment from a movie as it does a meticulously composed still image.

This dancer is a dynamo of posing energy. Here, she is captured mid-dance, leaping in the air in front of a bank of ice-blue glass blocks that glow with the brilliant light of the outdoors. Her body language screams of strength and her vibrant spirit. The warm golden tones of her nude figure contrast with the turquoise grid behind her.
