This intensely dark art photograph has just a hint of sweetness, in which a nude elfin figure gently clutches the fingerboard of a plain, black electric guitar. She looks straight ahead with wide eyes, not at us, but through us.
The predominantly dark tonal range immediately creates a restrained atmosphere. The tonality dips into near-complete blackness in places; even the gloss on the guitar body is a muted gray. The edge of the guitar gets lost against the mesh of the grill cloth.
Only a few tiny points of near-white are visible within the reflective metallic parts of the tuning pegs, saddle, knobs, and screws. The large areas of dark tones give a moody gravitas to the composition, and make the few bright highlights sparkle brightly by comparison.
She sits on the amplifier, placing her calves on either side. Although her pose is provocative, it is not explicit; she is partially obscured by the neck of the guitar. Nonetheless, it’s unclear that she is concerned or aware of its strategic placement.
Her disposition is one of quiet confidence, challenging notions of decorum. She exerts control over the scene, with a conscious pose that is also unguarded.
The image contains a multitude of details. Glimmering metallic earrings are visible in the shade of her shoulder-length, brunette hair. Two cables are plugged into the amp, with a free plug lying in the tangle on the floor, implying the absence of a second instrument. She wears a bracelet with a semiprecious stone. A necklace suspends a forty-five caliber bullet, mostly hidden behind the tuning pegs. On one ankle is a tan line from a now-missing anklet.
