Limited edition color photograph
A solitary figure lifts from her prone position on a towel. Her warm tones contrast with the bleached terry cloth. Behind her is a swimming pool. A series of shrubs are interspersed along a landscaping wall on the far side of the pool. These elements are stacked in layers, from a crisp foreground to a misty background. These layers form the composition of this limited edition color photograph.
The water appears still, as does her body. Her neck is extended and her chin is tilted gently upward in a serene expression. Slanting lines that run nearly horizontally, give a sense of tension to this otherwise balanced composition.
A chrome ladder, descending from the patio into the water, interrupts the repetition of straight lines. The ladder is also placed at a conspicuous gap between bushes, visible from this particular vantage. These background elements, slightly out of focus yet undoubtedly identifiable, add depth to the scene.
The predominant colors of the image are earth tones. The palette is accented by the bright blue of the water and light green of the foliage. The white of the towels, as well as the highlights on the chrome are two bright areas that stand out.
Outstretched arms prop up her upper body. This small variation from laying prone imparts volumes into her message. She has transformed into a pinup character, flaunting rather than resting. It also implies a state that existed before she raised up, as well as a mystery perhaps yet to come.
From her hips to her toes we see the tautness of her elongated pose. Each limb, each hand, and her feet are aligned. We get a sense of symmetry, that would be evident if our viewpoint were centered above her.
Overall, the image features soft shadows, with the darkest areas immediately beneath the subjects. At scale, there is plenty of detail to explore in this limited edition color photograph. Highlights define the main character’s face. Her ears feature two piercings. One is occupied by a single metal stud, the other displays a trio of tiny spheres.
