Contemporary Black and White Photography

This contemporary black and white photography depicts a woman in a brewery. Composed of near monochromatic tones, the artwork consists of both warm and cool hues. Slightly bluish (cool) tones are selectively applied to shadows and midtones. Warmer tones (hints of amber) are selectively applied to other parts of the image.

This unlikely scenario both celebrates and makes light of the history of sensual imagery. Emily’s statuesque figure is iconic in the genre. Her long blonde hair is a symbol of femininity. Her hair is swept behind one shoulder. An arm reaches to cover half of her chest. Her legs are crossed at the ankles, but the representation of femininity is anything but modest.

Small details populate the tableaux. A scale on the brew tank whimsically meanders between the same few numbers. Various valves and spigots adorn the chrome pipes. Reflections are everywhere in the mirrored surfaces.

The rigid industrial environment of chrome and steel is made up of straight lines and flat surfaces. Giant curved tanks contrast with the other shapes.

Contemporary black and white photography of the female form can be analyzed along several facets. While some are anonymous studies of form, this image presents the character as a protagonist in a narrative. This artwork prefers crisp edges over amorphous forms. And the monochrome treatment is nearly devoid of color, save subtle warming and cooling.
