This imaginary site line between the in-picture viewer and her subject creates an imaginary line connecting the two. Their actions are plausibly an early rehearsal or perhaps a planning session, a story within a story. A third female swims toward the viewer and above the camerawoman, seemingly uninvolved with the main activity of the other two figures.

Composition and Theme

The overall composition can be divided into a left/right split where a slanted swath of blue divides the leftmost nude figure from the other two. There is also a foreground, midground, background division, with the upper right character occupying the space closest to the viewer.

The image features typical underwater sights: hard shadows cast against the bottom of the pool and ribbons of light dancing across the blue expanse. This pattern continues onto the figures’ bodies, helping unite them with the background and imparting a clear sense of depth. A sense of depth is also emphasized by the visibility of the pool’s edge and water’s surface at the very top of the composition.

We catch only a glimpse of each of the women’s faces. The largest figure in the composition is the only one who faces us. She intersects the top of the image, cut off just above her nose. This effect furthers the spontaneous, unrehearsed feeling of the scene. The other two nude figures are turned mostly away.

Despite these layers of mystery, the three characters give us hints about their emotional states. One has a visible smile which speaks volumes. The others, engrossed in their activities, communicate their dispositions through body language. The actor in the scene seems to be fixing her hair, while the camera operator is fixed solely on her subject.

This underwater art photograph imparts a feeling that something is about to happen close to us but without perfect clarity: we are witnessing this prelude through the murky lens of the aquatic environment.

The woman on the right extends her arm in front of the body on the left edge. The central character does not intersect either of the two who frame her. She stands on her toes, her back curved, confidently looking forward. The composition presents a series of concentric shapes. Each ring of the composition occupies a layer further away from our point of view.

Inner-most of these layers, and the furthest away, is the almost-white negative shape (open space) between the central figure’s torso and her bent arm.

The central figure forms the second shape. The distinct outline of her body is isolated in the design. She is more prominent than the other women. Despite her relative visual size, her distinct presentation allows her to visually dominate the design elements.

The bright light surrounding her is a third layer, this bright circle of light gives way to the fourth layer: the darker background around the central figure.

The final layer is the ring made up of the two foreground figures that merge with all four frame edges. These two figures obscure the entirety of three edges of the image, leaving only the floor open at the bottom to show some depth around the central subject. They reframe the central figure, disrupting the straight edges of the image.

These shapes emphasize the depth between the figures in the foreground and background. However, one can also contemplate this artwork for it’s two-dimensional aspects, observing the figures and spaces between them.

A discussion of the composition of this artwork can begin with the placement of the three subjects. Examining the placement of each, we see pattern and variation. While the group is approximately centered and evenly distributed, the leftmost torso is angled, disrupting the symmetry. She bends sideways at the hips, resting her weight on the rope and setting her apart from the two who stand more vertically.

When it comes to cropping, the treatment of the space around the women is a bit unusual. A more conventional arrangement would place their bodies lower in the frame, without as much consideration to the ropes.
The three characters recede from closest to furthest as they progress from left to right, emphasizing a sense of depth and an irregularity in their otherwise even spacing.

With regards to the context of this image, we can discuss the difference between eroticism and explicitness, two terms that although related, do not mean the same thing.

The rightmost figure is explicit in the sense that she does not attempt to conceal her body. However, her pose is far from provocative. Rather, her nudity is prevented as a matter of fact. Nudity in itself, presented without intention, lacks any erotic flair.

The leftmost woman, although facing away, is sensuous in both her pose and the lack of effort to high details of her body. In addition to the immediate impact of this exhibitionist posture, it ensures minimal concealment.

On the other hand, the tactile way the two edge forms interact with the heavy rope, can be interpreted as erotic, even though it is not explicit. Although they merely wrap the rope around their arms, several factors about this evoke eroticism. The heavy rope is textured and it wraps tightly around their arms, and receives the caress of their fingers.

The central figure in this large art photograph stands in contrast to the other two. Her pose is deliberately the most modest of the three. She is turned slightly away from us, with one leg lifted to conceal what the others show.

By including three poses, one provocative, one more modest, and one that is explicit but lacking in eroticism, the viewer is encouraged to ponder how we interpret each of the signals in this photograph.

The colors of this image are soft and neutral. The figures themselves are an invigorating shade of peach, filling the scene with life. The twisted strands of rope are a light tan and the characters’ hair is a darker brown. Although this palette is limited to warm tones, there is a range of intensities from light to dark and from bright salmon to deep shadow. The slightly blue expanse of featureless space around them give the subtle colors of the subjects extra emphasis.

Theme and Composition

The image has an otherworldly feel, with the women inhabiting underwater positions without an apparent need for air. The camerawoman on the right appears to float towards the surface, positioned above the pool bottom with her hair gliding below her body. Her arm is outstretched upward, bubbles indicating that she is releasing her held breath.

In contrast, the camerawoman on the left appears to be sinking lower in the water, her feet and buttocks firmly anchored on the bottom and her hair trailing above her. The middle subject gives no such indications of motion, with her toes and fingertips brushing the pool’s floor and her hair swirling around her head.

The scene calls to mind free-spirited games in the pool, with the figures performing underwater tricks and experimenting with waterproof cameras to capture moments that are impossible on land. They are in their own submarine world, where only visual communication is possible. This image of nudes with an old car links to the Great Depression, which afflicted every ethnicity in America. About fifty percent of African Americans were out of work, and tensions between blacks and whites surged in the U.S. The predecessors of these two models might have been in competition for jobs to build automobiles like this one. This car, found in a shop that restores rusting shells into candy-glossy gems, symbolizes the power of nostalgia. Rather than gloss over the past, we can use it to reflect and draw inspiration.

The overall composition is dominated by a background of dark tones and muted colors. The figures glow against the expanse of inky blues and rusty reds. The bright colors of the three characters help pull the viewers eyes from left to right, as well as encourage us to examine more subtle details.

It can be difficult to produce an original contribution to the theme of an art nude photograph of women and a car. The choice of a dilapidated roadster, rather than a restored or souped-up hot-rod was a conscious one for this reason. A vintage gas pump and Coca-Cola vending machine also evoke a time when things were less automated. One can imagine the attendant pumping gas for motorists as they marvel at the Coke machine’s autonomous ability to sell beverages.

The arcing paths of light made up of several rows of parallel lines. These converge and separate through their curves.

This is either a Cabal of identical triplets, or a single sorcerer who has made phantasmal copies of herself. Her glowing magic creates a time-lapsed display that simultaneously obscures and enhances her appearance.

The figure at left stands on her toes. Her legs are taut and her back arches forward. Her arms stretch forward, splayed fingers dissolving into the darkness. Her head bows forward and disappears behind her arm in a tangle of dangling hair.

The central figure stands in a dancer’s pose. Her legs are crossed, and her body twists in the opposite direction. Her arm bends upward, forming a triangle with her neck and shoulder muscles. The final figure mirrors this pose; the two figures step away from each other, and their torsos twist towards one another. Their arms stretch towards the void between them and blur together.

The more erotic elements of this composition are partly obscured by light and movement, but are nevertheless discernible to in inquisitive viewer. This fact creates a balanced aesthetic that is of importance in erotic fine art photography.

Each of the trio of figures is posed in a similar fashion, theatrical in nature, with expressive hand gestures and tension in the legs. In each figure, a knee is bent and a heel raised off the floor, her shift in balance is evident, adding an element of movement. One figure shows her full face, another shows just a sliver of her profile. The other head is turned away, fully cloaked in black hair.

Surveying this monochrome art photo, the most striking elements of composition are the even arrangement of the characters and the somewhat symmetrical way their legs are posed. Those on the edge bend one leg outward. The center figure mimics the pose of the one to her left.

Each figure is firmly wrapped with thick strands of twisted Manila, the natural fibers of the rope fraying.
